Lily Smernou

Lily E. Smernou moved to United States in the early 1980’s to pursue her doctorate in psychology. For her scientific work, research, and teaching Smernou used computers extensively and when she later embarked on creative quests, she chose to work with technology tools; these tools would offer infinite creative possibilities and freedom to express her vision.

Working in the style of magic realism Smernou is constructing images that most often incorporate architectural elements reflecting her primary, architectural background.  Physical layers devised to create depth, along with inherent perception principles and symbolism distinguish her work.  Smernou has created a plethora of images with narrative qualities, allowing the viewers to project their own worlds into her works.

Smernou has exhibited locally and nationally, has major installations in Atlanta buildings, has won several awards, has been reviewed by the Atlanta Journal Constitution and other city publications, and has been published by The Georgia Review.  She recently participated in the “Elemental” exhibition at the Naomi Silva Gallery in conjunction with AGA Introductions 2006.
