Naomi Silva Gallery, focusing on the art of Latin American and Mediterranean countries, (although not exclusively) opened its doors in September of 2002 at Atlanta's Tula Art Center. This gallery is a completely renovated exhibition space in the Tula Art Center which consists of several galleries geared towards contemporary art, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Georgia. According to Naomi Silva, the gallery's founder and director, its mission is two-fold: to educate the local public about the art of Latin America and to offer a more continuous representation of Latin American and Latino artists in Atlanta. In this sense, the Naomi Silva Gallery fills a void in the Atlanta's art scene even though more well-established local galleries have begun to feature Latin American and Latino artists with greater frequency. Since its founding, the response of the local public, the media, and many of the local Latin artists to the gallery has been very positive.
The gallery has created a reputation for representing the work of artists with inventive conceptual and distinctive artistic visions. Accomplishing this through their unique juxtaposition of techniques and mediums, these artists are pioneers of their discipline.
During her professional career in Chicago, Naomi Silva worked in the fine art market. She was initially a photo stylist for photographers and then went on to represent commercial photographers and film production houses as a producer / salesperson for Quicksilver, a multi media and special effects house.
She attended the Harrington Institute of Design in Chicago and later she studied Photography at the Southeastern Center for the Arts in Atlanta.
She relocated to Atlanta to establish a Southeast Division of Quicksilver, and then went on to represent commercial photographers such as Neil Higgins, Don Sparks, Stephan Findel, and Ford Smith. She later included designers, film production and illustrators and became one of the top commercial art representatives in Atlanta. |
